The Shiv Linga, also known as the Shiva Lingam, is a representation of Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. The word “linga” means a symbol or mark, and the Shiv Linga symbolizes the formless and infinite nature of Lord Shiva.

The Shiv Linga is a sacred symbol of Lord Shiva’s abundant power and cosmic union. It is a circular form that expresses the indescribable, illimitable, and formless light that is Shiva. 

The Shiv Linga is typically depicted as an upright cylindrical structure with a rounded top, representing the male creative energy (Shiva) and the female reproductive energy (Shakti) coming together. It is often made of stone, though other materials such as metal or crystal can also be used. The base of the Shiv Linga, known as the yoni, represents the cosmic womb or the feminine aspect of creation.

The concept of the Shiv Linga emphasizes the formless and transcendental nature of God, beyond gender and physical attributes. It signifies the union of the divine energies and represents the cosmic principles of creation, preservation, and dissolution.

As for the number of lingas, it is believed that there are countless Shiv Lingas present throughout the world. These lingas can be found in temples, sacred sites, and natural formations.
