WHAT IT IS?
Dakshinavarti Shankh is a sacred Hindu object also known as conch shell in English. As per the Shastras and religion, this shell holds a lot of importance in our sect. This shell is found in the Indian ocean from the shell of a large sea snail and that too from the one that has the very rare reverse turning spiral.
It has been named Dakshinavarti as when it is held with the spout (siphonal canal) pointed up, this conch’s spiral twists rightwards (dakshinavarti) rather than very much more common form, which twists leftwards (vamavarti).
Importance of Dakshinavarti Shankh:
There are a lot of different types of conches. Out of these, two conches hold immense importance. One is Vamavarti shankh and the other is Dakshinavarti shankh. In Tantra Shastra, Dakshinavarti shankh is considered to be more of use than Vamavarti shankh. Due to its closed mouth it is only worshiped and does not release any sound.
Dakshinavarti shankh symbolises Goddess Laxmi and therefore is a symbol for fame and success. Worshipping this shankh makes a person’s life rich and prosperous. It brings success in business. It is believed that pouring water to the Sun from a Dakshinavarti shankh eliminates eye problems. It is also believed that if you fill water in this shankh and keep it besides your bed at night, your home will always have a peaceful atmosphere.
Establishing Dakshinavarti Shankh:
Dakshinavarti shankh should be purified before being established in a house. It should be cleaned on Wednesday or Thursday in an auspicious time with milk, ganges water, incense stick, deep, panchamrit etc. It should be kept on a red cloth lying on a silver platform.
The open end should be facing the sky and the other end should be facing you. This shankh should be filled with rice and red thread. A swastika should be drawn on this shankh and it should be worshipped with sandalwood, flowers, dhoop and deep.
MANTRA Of Dakshinavarti Shankh: After Properly establishing the conch, one should chant this mantra.
Om Hrim Shrim Namah
Sridhar Karasthaya Payonidhi Jatayan
Laxmi Sahodaraya Fal Pradaya Fal Pradaya
Sridakshinavarta Shankhaya Sri Hrim Namah.
Dakshinavarti Shankh and Tantra:
This conch is widely used in tantra activities. It is said that one can get relieve from all the problems if water is kept in a Dakshinavarti shankh. If one sprinkles water from this conch on any person or object, then it is believed to get free from any negative or tantric spell. Also, this conch brings immense wealth and prosperity in the life of the person.
DO YOU KNOW:
Genuine Dakshinavarti Lakshmi Conches are only found in the Indian Ocean, between Myanmar (Burma) all the way to Sri Lanka. There are three main localities of this shankh in India. Shells from all the localities show definite morphological variations. The three localities are the Indian Ocean near Ram Setu, Sri Lanka, Ramishwaram to Tuticorin. Shells from this region are rare in occurrence. The second locality is Arabian Sea or Western India. The third locality is Bay of Bengal.
Varieties showing mixed characters have also been observed. The imitation (Lightning Whelks) mostly come from Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. This imitation is also known as African Valampuri. Other than busyconid species, few other species showing presence of folds in the cavity are wrongly mentioned as Dakshinavarti. These species though sinistral are different species. Having folds does not mean that they are all species under the genus Turbinella Linn.
