Dev Uthani Ekadashi in 2024, also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi or Dev Utthana Ekadashi, marks an important day in the Hindu calendar. Falling in the Kartik month, it is celebrated on the eleventh lunar day (Ekadashi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon). During Chaturmas, a period stretching from Dev Shayani Ekadashi (when Lord Vishnu “sleeps”) to Dev Uthani Ekadashi (when he “wakes up”), devotees refrain from performing certain rituals, including marriage ceremonies. Dev Uthani Ekadashi, therefore, becomes a moment of joy and celebration as it brings back the opportunity to conduct these rituals with divine blessings.
The story associated with Dev Uthani Ekadashi is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. It begins with the Devas (gods) who sought a way to defeat the Asuras (demons) who were causing chaos in the universe. After seeking guidance from Lord Vishnu, he decided to rest, entering a state of cosmic slumber to bring balance to the universe.
During this time, Goddess Lakshmi, Vishnu’s consort, took responsibility for maintaining cosmic order. As Lord Vishnu went into a state of Yog Nidra (cosmic sleep) on Dev Shayani Ekadashi, the Devas were advised to observe patience and avoid disturbing the balance. The four months passed with devotion and patience from the Devas, while humans observed specific rituals and fasts, awaiting the lord’s reawakening.
On Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu awoke, ready to restore order and prosperity. His reawakening symbolized the end of a period of pause, and the world became vibrant again, with new energies and opportunities. This story serves as a metaphor for enduring faith, patience, and renewal.
Dev Uthani Ekadashi is marked by various rituals, which vary across regions but commonly include:
Fasting and Prayers: Devotees observe a strict fast, abstaining from grains and beans, as a form of devotion. Many people prefer a complete fast, while others observe a partial fast by consuming fruits and milk.
Vishnu Puja: Devotees worship Lord Vishnu with flowers, lamps, and incense sticks, chanting Vishnu Sahasranama (a hymn of 1,000 names of Vishnu) and other sacred texts.
Tulsi Vivah: In many regions, Dev Uthani Ekadashi is also celebrated with the symbolic marriage of Lord Vishnu and the holy basil plant (Tulsi). This ritual is known as Tulsi Vivah, symbolizing the union of the divine with nature and is often performed by devotees in temples or at home.
