Maha Shivratri happens on the Krishna Paksha Trayodashi or Chaturdashi (13th or 14th day of the Hindu month Phalguna). Although the 14th day of every lunar month (the day before the new moon) is marked Shivaratri, the one with the utmost religious importance falls at this time of year. This year, Maha Shivratri falls on March 1st.

Numerous people are celebrating this day as the nuptials of Shiva and Shakti. On this day, Lord Shiva, per the tradition, wedded Goddess Parvati. Another tale related to this day is the Samudra Manthan, in which Mahadev rescued the cosmos by swallowing the venom in his throat.
ITS Vital IMPORTANCE
This is a very momentous day, both cosmologically and spiritually. Tapas and other purification rituals are anticipated to lead to Nirvana or enlightenment. Religious practices like meditation and yoga get more powerful during Maha Shivratri, and the virtues of chants such as Maha Mrityunjaya enhance. Idolizing Lord Shiva on this day would also lead to the elimination of craving and avarice.

During Maha Shivaratri, a significant event is Abhisheka on Shivalinga. Other elements comprise milk, honey, sugar, butter, black sesame seeds, Ganga Jal, and others. Following the abhisheka, or bathing of Siva Linga, sandalwood powder and rice are sprinkled, followed by fresh flowers and fruits. According to Shiva Purana, all these observations have certain meanings.
- Bathing Shivalinga with water, milk, honey, and betel leaves marks the purification of the soul.
- Applying vermillion or kumkum symbolizes virtue.
- Offering fruits indicates longevity and gratification of desires.
- The burning of incense symbolizes wealth. • Lighting of lamps indicates the attainment of knowledge.
- Betel leaves signify satisfaction with worldly pleasures.
